While hair dyes have been around for a long time, many of us are beginning to find out that there are actually different types of hair dyes. Knowing how these dyes work and what their effects are on hair can help us decide which dye is best for us to use.
Permanent Hair Dye
Permanent hair dyes are quite popular and widely available. People go for this when they only want a low-maintenance hair color, because once you have this in your hair, it won't wash off. You've probably seen boxes of these displayed on shelves in most drugstores, department stores, and supermarkets. Brands like L'oreal, Revlon, Kolours, Clairol, and Bigen offer colors like Black, Chestnut Brown, and Copper Red, to name a few. This type of hair dye lasts the longest in hair. It does not wash out of hair, but slight fading may happen. It works by removing the natural color (i.e. melanin) from your hair, and dyeing it to the new color. It is normally mixed with peroxide developers for best effect.
Semi-permanent Hair Dye
Unlike permanent hair dyes, semi-permanent hair dyes only COAT the hair with color, gradually depositing in the outer layers of each strand. These dyes normally last in the hair for about 2-6 weeks, depending on various factors: current hair condition, hair’s natural resistance to hair dyes, frequency of hair washing, and degree of hair’s exposure to elements. This hair dye type works best on lightened/bleached hair -- the lighter the hair, the brighter and more vivid the color result; the darker the hair, the more subtle the color result. The hair color will fade over time with each washing, and each color have different ways of fading.
Personally, I've grown to love semi-permanent hair color. I don't need to commit to a single color, so I can change colors as often as I like. It's also my way of relieving stress. Like when I feel too much anger or sadness or plain work-stress, I gotta change my hair color to feel new and free again! It's exciting and fun, because it keeps people guessing what colors I have in my hair as they seem to change into new hues and shades during the fading process!
All semi-permanent hair dyes sold by Funky Streaks are vegetable dyes. These are products made of largely natural ingredients and do not contain harsh chemicals like ammonia and peroxide. Those that come in cream format gives additional conditioning benefit, while those in liquid format enhances the glossiness or shine of hair during the coloring process.

Temporary Hair Dye
Temporary Dyes stay only on the hair surface, and washes off easily with shampoo. People usually use these dyes if they only want the color in for a day or until they wash their hair. These usually come in the form of styling products such as hair gel, mousse, and spray, but they're also available in rinses (like Roux color rinses). They're relatively easy and quick to use, and the color effects last for only a few days. Just be careful about water when you use temporary dyes, because if you’re caught in the rain or sweating buckets with this dye type in your hair, it will wash down and run into your clothes, which can get messy!
So have you decided which type of hair dye is best for you?
