Which strength of developer should you get?
  • 6% / 20VOL - best if you need to lift 1-2 levels, such as making blonde hair just one or two shades lighter.
  • 9% / 30VOL - the strength of choice for most stylists as it is strong enough to lift 2-4 levels, particularly on already processed hair.
  • 12% / 40VOL - many users who prefer this strength take a more aggressive approach to lightening as it makes bleaching faster. In some cases, it is the best choice for stubbornly dark virgin hair that is resistant to bleaching. Just keep in mind that this is also the harshest and if used improperly, it will cause serious damage to hair and scalp.

SILVER/GRAY DYES
WARNING: Silver/gray is not for beginners!!! Silver/gray hair color is the most challenging to achieve. Not only that, it is the most high-maintenance because silver/gray color fades the fastest compared to other colors. To pull this off, first you need to have the right level of blonde - usually this is toned very light blonde to platinum blonde (level 9-10, ideally toned to cool blonde shades) before coloring with silver dye. Keep in mind that each brand of silver dye is formulated differently, so will give different results even when used on the same base hair color. You may have also heard that purple shampoos or purple conditioners do a toning effect that's similar to gray - which is great, but then again, it may work for some people and it may not work for others. So, the best ways to find out what to do to get silver/gray are to do your research (google is your best friend) or experiment and try a product to figure out how it works.

The approaches to achieving silver/gray color effect are different for each manufacturer, and this is why there are different formulations - some are visibly blue-toned and some are visibly violet/purple-toned.
PURPLE SHAMPOOS
  • ​​Brightens white and gray hair. 
  • Shampoos away yellow. 
  • Refreshes faded highlighted hair. 
  • Tones down brassiness. 
  • Maintains and refreshes cool, ash-toned hair color.

General Usage Instructions:
Apply to wet hair. Lather, rinse, and repeat. For additional brightening and color, leave second lather on for 3-5 minutes. No patch test required.

Be sensitive to the time you let shampoo stay in hair. More time for shampoo to soak allows color to deposit deeper in hair.

Funky Streaks feedback on PURPLE SHAMPOOS:
For us, the most pigmented shampoo is Clairol Shimmer Lights, followed by Ultra Shiny Silver, and lastly Aquanet. We noticed that most of our customers use purple shampoos as a coloring agent, but keep in mind that purple shampoos are originally intended to maintain the cool tones of blonde hair, so the color effect of purple shampoos will be gradual and usually last until the next time you wash your hair with regular shampoo (and even regular hair conditioner).

Also, keep in mind that purple shampoos can be quite drying on hair, so be sure to condition your hair to prevent that. It would be better to use hair serum or hair oil (can be coconut oil, argan oil,  etc,) to condition hair rather than regular hair conditioner to avoid wash-off of the color deposited by the purple shampoo.
