Sensitivity Test & Strand Test
Disclaimer: The following information is intended to be a GUIDE. If ever you need a professional opinion, please refer to your trusty hairdresser or salon professional.
This is important! Before dyeing your hair, skin sensitivity test is strongly recommended, especially when you have a history of allergies. Also, we suggest doing a strand test to check the actual color result and level of hiyang or compatibility with your hair.
Test #1: Skin Sensitivity Test
This is important, especially if you have a history of allergic reactions in the past. This test checks whether your body will have any adverse allergic reactions once the hair dye is applied on your skin. Common allergic reactions include: welts or redness on skin, itchiness, hives, rashes, and blisters. More extreme reactions include: difficulty breathing, nausea, headaches, and severe pain. Developing any of these symptoms indicate you are allergic to the product, and therefore you must consult a doctor and discontinue use of the product.
Test #2: Strand Test
This is recommended when you want to be sure of the hair dye results – the color, the texture, duration of dyeing, etc. – before actually putting it on your head.

- Clean a small area of skin for the test (normally, the inner portion of your arm).
- Smear a small amount of the hair dye on your skin, then cover with a gauze or band-aid.
- Let the hair dye stay on your skin for about 48 hours. If your body has not reacted to the product by this time, it’s safe to start dyeing your hair now!
Test #2: Strand Test
This is recommended when you want to be sure of the hair dye results – the color, the texture, duration of dyeing, etc. – before actually putting it on your head.
- Cut a sample of your hair. It’s better to get this from the underlayers of your hair, so it’s not noticeable. You don’t need to wash your hair before dyeing. It’s better that the hair dye goes on raw hair without conditioner and other hair products, so that the dye may coat the hair more effectively.
- Using scotch tape, stick the sample hair onto a dry surface (say for example, a clean sheet of paper or plastic).
- Follow the instructions of the hair dye, and apply the hair dye on the hair sample accordingly.
- After letting the dye soak into the hair, wash and rinse. Check the hair sample if you’re happy with the results.
